Tips For Lash Artists: Simple Ways To Stretch Your Muscles

It's no secret that being a lash artist is hard work. It requires a lot of physical endurance and strength to be able to handle the long hours and constant bending. Unfortunately, all that hard work can take its toll on your body, leading to muscle strain and other injuries.

But don't worry, there are plenty of exercises you can do to help keep yourself healthy and injury-free. In this blog post, we'll discuss some of the best exercises for lash artists. So read on for tips on staying strong and limber while you work!

Stretch Before & After Your Treatment

Since lash technicians need to spend hours sitting with your arms, neck and back positioned to apply lashes, stretching those muscles before and after your work is very important for preventing and reducing stiffness and strain. Here are some basic but effective stretching exercises to get your upper body muscles loosened up.

Hand and Wrist Exercises

Being a lash technician, having nimble hands and fingers to be precise and accurate is essential. Taking care of your hands is greatly important for lash artists as your career depends on your hands. Here are some hand and wrist stretching exercises for you to keep the hand pain and strain away:

Thumb Stretch:

Put your hand in a neutral, relaxed position with your fingers and thumb straight. Bend your thumb across your palm, touching the tip of your thumb to the bottom of your small finger.

If you are unable to make your thumb touch, stretch out as far as possible. Hold it for 20-30 seconds. You may do this stretching 3-5 times a day.

Fist Stretch:

Put your hand and fingers close together and straight with your wrist, forearm, and hand resting on a table or other flat surface. Then, make a gentle fist with your thumb around the outside of your fingers but don’t squeeze, as if you’re doing a handshake.

Next, move slowly and smoothly to return your hand to the starting position and repeat it multiple times on each hand. You may do this stretching at least 2-3 times a day.

Wrist Exercise:

Put your hands in a handstand position and extend your wrist and fingers acutely, hold for 5 seconds. Then, straighten both wrists and relax your fingers, make a tight fist with both hands and bend both wrists down while holding the fists for 5 seconds.

You should repeat these steps 10 times. When finished, hang your arms loosely at your side and shake them out gently for a few seconds. You can repeat this exercise 3-5 times a day.

Neck Exercise:

Lash artists’ necks are always strained when applying lashes as our heads are bent all the time. Therefore, taking care of the neck muscles is important.

Start by looking straight ahead, keep your chin tucked down slightly and move your head backward slowly as far as you can without straining or feeling pain.

Then, gently turn your head to the right and then to the left. Hold for 2-3 seconds before moving your head to the opposite side. Repeat this exercise 10 times in each direction, two times a day.

Back Exercise:

As lash artists always bend their heads during the treatments, it’s inevitably making our backs hurt. Here is a simple way to exercise your neck to stretch and ease the pain.

Start by clasping both hands together with your thumbs pointing down. Stretch your arms out in front of your body, gently reach out till you feel your shoulder blades stretching away from each other, and gently bend your head forward, and hold it for 15-30 seconds. You may repeat it 2-4 times a day.

Tricep Stretch:

Doing repetitive motions and holding the same posture for hours can make your arms feel tight or painful. Therefore, stretching your tricep is an effective way to loosen your arms and keep potential strain injuries away.

Start by bringing one elbow up behind the back of your head while bending your arm. Then, grab the elbow with your opposite hand and pull your elbow toward your head lightly. Repeat these steps with the other arm and elbow. You may hold each side for 30 seconds and do it at least 2-3 times a day.

Eye Exercises

Apart from the muscles of your upper body, resting and relaxing your eyes are also important for a lash artist after working for hours. To keep your eyes well-rested, you must try these simple eyes exercise:

Palming:

Start by warming up your hands by rubbing them together. Close your eyes and put your palms over the corresponding cheekbone. Cup your hand over each eye and breathe deeply for 5 minutes. You should do this for 30 seconds at a time and keep repeating for 2 minutes.

Flexing:

Start by looking straight ahead and face forwards, and then look up and down without moving your head, do this 10 times. Next, look to the right and then to the left without moving your head again, do this 10 times. You may do it several times a day.

Maintaining Good Posture While Lashing:

Apart from stretching your body parts, holding a good posture while doing your lash extensions treatment is also important to alleviate pressure and fatigue in your back and upper body. Along with those simple exercises, this can surely make a difference in your health!

You should keep your back as straight as possible and hold a slight 90-120 degree bend in your arms and knees while seated down, you should also make sure your back is supported in your seat.

 Summary:

We know that being a lash technician, bending your heads and necks, straining your hands and backs are inevitable. However, if you don’t take good care of your body and do some exercise regularly, it might cause you strain injuries.

If you value your career as a lash pro, you must train yourself to be conscious of your posture and do some stretching every day. If you can keep the routine of stretching your muscles, soon you will see a difference and feel better!
